Start with a sweatshirt they like
Lay the existing sweatshirt flat without stretching it. Measure across the body from one underarm seam to the other, then measure the body length from the high shoulder area beside the collar to the bottom hem. Write down both measurements. A size letter alone is less useful when two garments fit differently.
