A tote for books: compare the cover size before choosing

A tote's listed width and height tell you something useful, but they do not describe all the space inside. Before buying a bag for a reader, measure a closed book or notebook and check what the bag measurements actually mean.

Our free cotton tote size comparison draws your item's flat outline against a nominal 38 × 42 cm bag body. You can use inches or centimetres and rotate the outline. It runs in your browser without an account or purchase.

Start with the closed cover

Measure across the cover and from top to bottom, including any protective case. The tool compares those two dimensions. It does not use a laptop or tablet's diagonal screen measurement, which is not the same as its outside size.

Try a flat paper example first. An A4 sheet is 21 × 29.7 cm; a US Letter sheet is 8.5 × 11 in. They make the diagram easier to understand, but a book with the same cover size also has a spine, covers and weight.

Read the diagram as a comparison

The solid outline is the supplier's nominal bag-body size. The dashed outline is your object, drawn with the same scale and bottom reference line. The numbers show the difference in width and height. The screen drawing is not actual size and does not show an insertion position.

A smaller outline does not confirm that an object fits inside. The diagram does not model seams, the opening, fabric movement, object thickness, several books or the clearance needed to put things in and take them out. It does not supply a load limit. Compare with a similar bag you already use when possible.

Check the exact bag before ordering

The 38 × 42 cm reference comes from Printful's Cotton Color Tote Bag details. The supplier also gives an approximate imperial size of 15 × 16.5 in. Our diagram uses the stated metric dimensions; these are not independently measured internal clearances.

One example from our own shop is the Dachshund Garden cotton tote: one natural-colour cotton bag with a dachshund and garden-pot illustration printed on the front; the back is blank. Its listed price was US$29.99 when checked on 28 October 2026, before a coupon or applicable checkout tax. Shipping is included for supported US destinations.

It is printed to order. The live listing has current availability, production and transit estimates, and the full return and issue-resolution terms. Do not use this outline comparison for a different bag style without checking that product's actual measurements.

For another illustration on a cotton tote, our Reading Frog, Hedgehog and Corgi tote guide compares three existing designs. Each linked item is sold separately.

Try your own two measurements

Open the free book-and-tote outline comparison. Replace the paper example with your own measured width and height, and check both orientations. Use it to picture dimensions, then make the real-world checks above.

Gleb Zaitsev Studio sells the linked bags. Our original illustrations, this text and the comparison code were developed with AI assistance. The diagram is a schematic, not a physical product or fit test. No AI service runs while you use the tool.
